Years ago, leaving comments with links to your website on other blogs was a popular way to boost SEO. The idea was that each link could help drive traffic and even improve your site’s ranking in search results. But today, this strategy is outdated and offers minimal SEO value.

Modern search engines are designed to recognize quality over quantity, so they give more weight to relevant, trusted backlinks from reputable sources. Links in blog comments are usually tagged with “nofollow,” which signals search engines not to factor them into your ranking. As a result, while commenting on blogs can still attract direct traffic, it won’t make a noticeable difference in SEO.

Another drawback is relevance. Posting a link on a blog that doesn’t align with your website’s topic isn’t just ineffective—it can look like spam. Sites like Google may penalize websites that engage in this kind of low-value link building, which can hurt your SEO rather than help it. So while thoughtful comments can still build visibility, the days of improving SEO through links in comments are over.

For these reasons, I’ve decided to disable the comment section on my own blog. Over time, it filled up with spammy comments linking to unrelated sites that added no value to the discussion. If you’d like to have a serious discussion about blogging or online business, I’d love to connect—just send me an email at info@weblogbetter.com or head over to WeBlogBetter on Facebook.
