How to Blend Personal Branding with Visual Storytelling, Inspired by a Walk Through Xintiandi

Today is the start of my Shanghai series of blog posts, and first out is Xintiandi. I am sitting in Starbucks sipping on my cappuccino, watching the mix of old and new architecture outside the window, and feeling completely inspired.
Xintiandi is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Shanghai. It’s where historic Shikumen buildings meet modern cafes, boutique stores, and glassy storefronts. Every detail, from the signage to the sidewalk, feels intentional. It doesn’t just look good, it tells a story.
And that got me thinking, your blog should feel the same way.
Just like Xintiandi blends old and new to create a unique identity, your blog’s design and branding should reflect your personality, your values, and your story. It’s not just about having pretty fonts or matching colors, it’s about creating a space that feels like you from the very first scroll.
Let’s talk about how to make that happen.
1. Design Like a Destination
When you walk into Xintiandi, you immediately know you’re somewhere special. The narrow lanes, the brick textures, the little balconies, they all add up to an experience.
Ask yourself,
What experience does your blog offer?
Does it feel consistent from page to page?
Does it reflect your niche, your tone, and your personality?
Whether you blog about tech, lifestyle, business, or travel, your visual identity should make readers feel like they’ve entered your world.
2. Use Visual Elements That Reflect Your Brand Story
Personal branding isn’t just about having your name on the site, it’s about showing up visually.
Here are some ideas,
Choose colors that match your energy or topic (calm, bold, warm, minimalist)
Use a consistent image style in your blog posts and social media
Add photos of yourself, even casual ones, to build connection
Design a logo that reflects your mission or message
Think of Xintiandi’s mix of old brick and modern glass. Your blog can mix professionalism with personality too.
3. Craft a Homepage That Tells a Story
Don’t treat your homepage like a noticeboard. Make it a narrative.
The best blogs take readers on a journey,
Start with a clear headline, who you help and how
Add a short personal intro to humanize your brand
Highlight key blog categories or services
End with a call to action (read more, subscribe, contact)
This layout mirrors a real-world space like Xintiandi, welcoming, stylish, and thoughtfully organized.
4. Write Like You Talk, Show What You Believe
Visual storytelling also includes your voice. The way you write on your blog is just as much a part of your brand as your layout.
So,
Use a consistent tone, professional, friendly, quirky, or bold
Include little stories or details about your life (especially in the About page)
Align your visuals and text, if your design is sleek and modern, your writing should match
People come back not just for the content, but because they feel they know you. They like your vibe.
5. Examples of Visual Branding That Feels Personal
As I sit in this quiet Starbucks corner in Xintiandi, sipping my coffee and browsing some of my favorite blogs, I realize something important:
The ones I love the most don’t try to please everyone. They stay true to their voice, their visuals, and their purpose.
Examples,
A blog about productivity with sharp lines, clean fonts, and monochrome photography
A food blog with handwritten fonts, cozy illustrations, and warm tones
A travel blog that feels like a scrapbook, filled with polaroid-style images and personal notes
What they have in common, cohesion. Consistency. A story you can see and feel.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a design degree or a branding agency to create a blog that feels like home. You just need clarity and intention.
Xintiandi taught me that great design isn’t just about looking good, it’s about meaning. It’s about creating a place where people want to come back, not just because of the content, but because of the experience.
So next time you tweak your blog layout, logo, or color scheme, ask yourself this,
What story am I telling with my design? Because when that story aligns with who you are, your blog becomes unforgettable.
